The IRS extended almost all tax filing and payment due dates for Los Angeles County residents to October 15, 2025, due to the devasting wildfires that occurred in Los Angeles County, California, as confirmed by the IRS website on January 10, 2025. The same extensions were granted by California as confirmed by the state website on January 11, 2025. As a result, between January 7, 2025, and October 15, 2025, Los Angeles County households were granted extensions to submit and pay their 2024 income tax, 2025 income tax estimates, 2024 gift tax, and estate tax forms. Additionally, the 45- and 180-day deadlines for Section 1031 exchanges, among other time-sensitive tax procedures, were also extended.
These local and state relief offerings are applicable not just to residents of Los Angeles County but also to taxpayers whose records are based in the covered disaster region and required to meet such tax deadlines. This means that regardless of a client's location, a client who is works with a Los Angeles County-based tax preparer would also be equally eligible for relief. Keep in mind that the IRS's extensions operate concurrently with any extensions that a taxpayer could have otherwise received under regulatory authority.
